Preamble of the department
The Department of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology is committed to provide high quality services to the children and adults with communications disorders (Speech & Hearing) through continual improvement in clinical services, public education, human resource development and research.
Aims & Objectives of the department:
- To serve as Resource Centre for rehabilitation of persons with developmental and communication disabilities.
- To establish linkages with existing medical, educational and employment services, following the principles of community- based rehabilitation and offer extension services in the rural areas to provide quality of clinical services to the communication and hearing disorders.
- To undertake human resource development by training rehabilitation professionals, village level workers, multi-rehabilitation workers & other functionaries in Govt. & non-Govt. sector, required for providing services to Speech and Hearing disabilities by MSJ&E.
- To develop strategies for delivery of rehabilitation services for communication disorders in suitable to the socio- cultural background of the region.
- To undertake research and development with specific reference to needs of diverse groups of people with Speech and Hearing disability, keeping in view the nature and severity of disability in the region.
- To undertake public education programs for creation of awareness in the parents and the community.
- To improve the Quality of Life of Persons with Communication Disorders.
- To generate quality man power at Diploma, Graduate level in the field of communication disorders to catered effective services to PwDs.
- To distribute Aids & Appliances for Hearing Impaired individuals under ADIP scheme.

Activities details:
Audiology and Speech Language Pathology are the two major areas in Speech and Hearing. The department is regularly involved in evaluation, diagnosis, counselling and Treatment of persons with different types of communication disorders. Assessment of communication disorders include detailed assessment of clients with speech and hearing problems (such as phonology, fluency and voice disorders), language problems (such as delayed language development, Neuro developmental disorders, Intellectual Disability, Cerebral Palsy, Specific Language Impairments and Aphasia) and related disorders (such as swallowing and oral motor difficulties) and also Multiple disabilities. Audiology Service includes Hearing Evaluation, Hearing Aid Trail, Hearing Aid Programming, Auditory Verbal Therapy, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
The detailed assessment of hearing includes behavioral tests such as Pure Tone Audiometry, Speech Audiometry, Behavioral Observation Audiometry (BOA), and Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA). The objective assessment procedure includes Immittance evaluation, measurement of Oto Acoustic Emissions (OAE), measurement of Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEP) and Auditory Steady State Responses (ASSR).
An assessment procedure starting from case history to assessment through standardized tests (i.e., Speech-Language and Hearing Tests) is used to find the diagnosis.
Parental and Caregivers Counselling and guidance services are also provided to clients and their families on various issues related to evaluation and management of persons with communication disorders on a regular basis. Group therapy sessions and parental training programs will be conduct regularly to provide best quality services.
The department involved providing public education, free distributions of aids and appliances to the needy, public education programs about ministry flagship programs, sensitization program for gross route level workers and short-term training programs. The Department of Speech-Language Pathology is also involved in development of resource and public education material on specific topics related to these disorders.
